Another new line for Nanopartz
Nanopartz are at it again – take a look at this video they have posted on YouTube. The vial contains solution of gold nanoparticles at an extremely high concentration. The quote below is taken from their website, and explains further:
“Nanopartz has developed a patent pending method that results in such high concentrations of gold nanoparticles (50mg/mL, >1000 OD) the resultant product no longer acts as a liquid but rather a metamaterial. This novel material will find uses in many new medical applications, including cancer therapy”

Nanopartz expansion
Nanopartz, the US-based company who specialise in the production and supply of gold nanoparticles, are planning on expanding their operations and staff headcount significantly over the next 5 years having recently moved into new purpose-built facilities in Loveland, CO. I was fortunate enough to have a tour of the new labs at the end of last year, and was impressed by the facilities which incorporate both new R&D labs and a large production area.
We’ve blogged before about some of the great products Nanopartz have developed – take a look at their catalogue for a full list.

Sourcing gold nanoparticles
As I mentioned on the blog a couple of weeks ago I attended the Nanoparticles 2009 meeting in Liverpool last week. I enjoyed the diverse programme which included papers and posters detailing novel uses of nanoparticles in a range of fields including healthcare, materials, sensors and analysis.
Naturally I was excited to see a considerable amount of gold-related research presented. Many of the delegates I spoke to were particularly interested in the recent advances in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles of specific shapes and sizes. Richard highlighted the progress made by Nanopartz in a recent post, whilst utilisegold.com has a directory of companies offering gold nanoparticulates in numerous forms.

Please feel free to get in touch with us if you require a specific type of gold nanoparticle – we may well be able to help!

Gold microrods
I love the way the team at Nanopartz continue to innovate and bring new gold-based products to market.
Their latest innovation is a product call Microgold. These Gold Microrods (GMRs) are hundreds of nanometers in the transverse dimension and up to 1 micron in lengths, making them the largest monodisperse particles available on the market.Microgold can be ordered here.

Solar Cell Efficiency
Electricity-generating solar cells are one of the most attractive alternatives for creating a long-term sustainable energy system.
Researchers are now looking at how nanotechnology can contribute in bringing down the cost and improve the performance of the system. I’ve just seen this story which looks at the use of quantum dots, but it reminded me that another way to enhance the absorption of the solar harvesting material in a solar cell is to make use of nanoparticles of gold.
Carl Hägglund at Chalmers University in Sweden has looked at how this can be done in the following publication Applied Physics Letters 92, 013113 (2008).
Catherine Murphy has also been rec
eiving funding to explore this potential new application for gold using nanorods.Gold nanorods are not widely available, but if you are working in this field and wish to try gold nanorods they can be purchased from NanoPartz.
