    Go easy on the Sprite

Like most parents I limit my children’s intake of fizzy drinks, not least because of the affect they can have on their teeth. This recent paper looked at how one popular make of drink affected the leaching of metal ions from gold alloys used in dentistry. Good to see that detailed research work is still being done on the longest used dental restoration material; gold.

You can find out a lot more on the use of gold in dentistry in the journal Gold Bulletin here.

New Book – Gold Science and Applications

I’m excited to announce that a new book ‘Gold – Science and Applications’ has now been published.

There have been many excellent books written on certain aspects of the science and technology of gold, most notably the book of the Hanau gold conference, held in 1996 (“Gold. Progress in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology”, edited by Hubert Schmidbaur and published in 1999) and there are several new books covering specific sectors of gold science e.g. on catalysis, chemistry and nanotechnology (see here).  However, for those seeking a broader reference source on gold and covering all technical sectors, the most appropriate book on gold, Gold Usage by Bill Rapson and Theo Groenewald, was published over 30 years ago in 1978. The world of gold has changed considerably since then. A few years ago Chris Corti and I believed it was time for an updated book that reflects the more recent developments.

With the co-operation of some of the leading experts in their field, we have attempted to produce a book that is a worthy successor to ‘Rapson’ and to provide an authoritive source of information. We have attempted to cover all the main scientific areas as well as the main areas of application. In some cases this has required some very detailed scientific chapters; other fields require less specific detail and have focused more on the practical application. In addition, to help readers place this science and technology in the context of a much wider gold market, a chapter on the supply, demand and pricing of gold is included. Taken together, our aim for the book is to appeal to both those working in academia and industry.

    Dental filling safety

smiling_teethIt appears there’s a lively debate going on in the US about the safety (or not) of amalgam-based dental fillings. You can read about it here.

What caught my eye was a comment from one dentist that ‘…..Except for gold, all materials have small potential safety issues….’ The biocompatibility of gold in dental applications is certainly well documented including in these papers in the Gold Bulletin archive…….

    ScienceDirect TOP25 Hottest Articles

The ScienceDirect portal’s TOP25 Hottest Articles is a useful summary of those research papers that have generated a good level of interest in the research community.

I often scan this list to identify worthwhile new research on gold and there is usually catalysis and nanotechnology papers in the Hottest list, not really surprising given that these topics have large followings. However, it wasn’t catalysis or nanotechnology that caught the eye in the most recent list. In the current list of top materials science papers I hadn’t expected to find a paper on a new gold dental alloy…… So, tooth1even in this established industry where the metallurgy of the alloys is very well known there is scope for innovation that is highly thought of by fellow researchers.

By the way, the current issue of Gold Bulletin also contains a gold-related dental alloy paper ‘The influence of the microstructure of high noble gold-platinum dental alloys on their corrosion and biocompatibility in vitro’ M. Colic, D. Stamenkovic, I. Anzel, G. Lojen, R. Rudolf, Gold Bull., 2009, 42, (1), 34-47
